Cover franked with 1896 2d Orange Queen Victoria perf 13 O/P OS tied by what appears to be a manuscript cancellation "NSW Paid", with embossed Military Staff Office crest on flap, addressed to Lord Richard Neville, Government House, Adelaide. Lord Richard Neville was the Private Secretary to the Governor of South Australia at the time of Federation, who later became the second Governor General of Australia. At the time of Federation troops from each of the 6 former Colonies travelled to other States, to take part in a series of parades before the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York. It is tempting to think this may have been a communication from a South Australian representative, to the South Australian Governor, updating details of a future visit. The reason for the manuscript cancellation is an intriguing mystery to us, but nonetheless an interesting item.
