1819 Inwards entire from London addressed to John Drummond Esquire, Naval Officer at the Derwent, Van Diemans Land with Paid Ship letter, 6 JA 1819, London Postal Marking and manuscript 1/9 rate marking. John Drummond was appointed as the Naval Officer in February 1815 and his duties included collecting duty on goods and liquor in addition to acting as Treasurer of the Police Fund. John Drummond and his sister-in-law appeared in court in September 1817, jointly charged with the murder of his child, but was not convicted due to lack of evidence. He was dismissed never to be reappointed in November 1817. This letter is from his brother who is imploring him to return to England because his wages are so poor, apparently being unaware he had been dismissed over a year earlier. One of the earliest inward covers to Tasmania.1819 Inwards entire from London addressed to John Drummond Esquire, Naval Officer at the Derwent, Van Diemans Land with Paid Ship letter, 6 JA 1819, London Postal Marking and manuscript 1/9 rate marking.
