1915 2d Grey Die I 3rd Wmk Pre-Substituted cliché Kangaroo with an advanced state of additional spectacular variety "Plate scratch from left frame by Geraldton to P of Postage" in mint vertical pair, the upper unit with variety "Scratch from lower frame to top right of P of Pence". This latter variety has not previously been noted and appears to be an extension of the scratch that appears on the lower unit and therefore of considerable importance. The variety was not present on pieces prior to the Plate scratch appearing, but was present, but not noted, on the Substituted Cliché monogram block of 9 ex Arthur Gray. The Pre-Substituted Cliche stamp with Plate scratch was only discovered in 2002, so was not listed in Pope's publication of that year. The variety is not illustrated in ACSC, which states, 3 (used) examples are recorded, one in a strip of 3, one has the watermark inverted. This is the only known mint copy of this stamp and the only multiple in a pair, showing the importance of the Plate scratch on the stamp above. Upper unit is MUH, the Pre-Substituted Cliché unit is hinged with a small thin. A similarly centered used copy of the Pre-Substituted Cliché with Plate scratch was sold in 2007 for $5,566.00. ACSC 7ia. Exhibition piece.
